Assistant Vice Provost for Animal Care – Sally Thompson-Iritani

 

Sally Thompson Iritani, DVM, PhD, is Assistant Vice Provost for Animal Care, Outreach, and the 3Rs in the Office of Research and Clinical Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the School of Public Health. She is also affiliated with the Center for One Health Research. She serves as the Institutional Official for the University’s animal care and use program and provides direct oversight of the Office of Animal Welfare, the Office of the Attending Veterinarian, and the Center for Laboratory Animal Training Resources. She also provides joint infrastructure oversight of the Department of Comparative Medicine and the Washington National Biomedical Research Center, working collaboratively to support scientific excellence, animal welfare, and regulatory compliance across the University’s research enterprise.

Dr. Thompson Iritani provides strategic leadership to advance ethical, rigorous, and innovative research practices. Her work emphasizes the integration of the 3Rs, Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement, Novel Alternative Methodologies, and emerging technologies to strengthen rigor, reproducibility, and translational impact. She leads institution wide initiatives that promote a culture of care, openness in science related to the use of animals in research, and the incorporation and applicability of the 3Rs and NAMs.

Her national and international service focuses on scientific excellence, animal welfare, research integrity, the 3Rs, NAMs, workforce resilience, and openness in science. She is a frequent invited speaker on strengthening research culture and integrating emerging methods in ways that support rigorous science and responsible animal care.
