Grants Management for Investigators

Course Description

The Grants Management for Investigators (GMI) orientation and refresher provide an overview of the grants management process at the University of Washington, including processes, compliance requirements, and audit concerns at each stage of the research project lifecycle. The focus is on PI roles and responsibilities for administering sponsored agreements and on the role of central offices at the UW in supporting processes and compliance for those agreements.

Who is required to take this training?

All University of Washington principal investigators (faculty and non-faculty) who apply for or receive externally funded grants or contracts are required to attend the 2 hour orientation initially with a 40 minute on-demand refresher every four years thereafter.  (More frequent attendance is encouraged to remain current with significant changes in sponsored program policy.) This opportunity is open to all eligible persons regardless of race, sex or other identity.

Summary of the requirement

The Office of the Provost requires GMI training of all UW faculty members and non-faculty principal investigators who receive externally funded grants or contracts to cover the management of research activities which occur under increasingly complex regulations by funding agencies, and federal and state governments.

Grants Management for Investigators Orientation Requirement (2 hours)

Audience: New principal investigators and non-PIs actively seeking funding, who have yet to attend a Grants Management for Investigators orientation.

  • Faculty and non-faculty who submit a proposal as UW Principal Investigator for the first time must attend a live or recorded orientation within twelve months of submitting the proposal via SAGE, if they have not attended one previously. First-time PIs are strongly encouraged to attend a orientation before submitting the proposal.
  • The live orientation is offered once per year via Zoom in the fall.
  • Through the rest of the year, PIs can meet their attendance requirement by viewing the recorded orientation.

Grants Management for Investigators Online Refresher (45 minutes)

Audience: Principal investigators who have previously attended an in-person orientation.

  • After the initial attendance at an in-person orientation, all principal investigators are required to renew their training every four years by either completing the online refresher or attending the in-person orientation again.
  • The on-demand refresher highlights compliance requirements, new federal and state regulations, and recent changes to research infrastructure and policy. The material is organized into required and optional modules; the entire course will take no more than forty-five minutes.
