Research Security Training
The Research Security Training program provides information on risks and threats to the global research ecosystem — and the knowledge and tools necessary to protect against these risks. It discusses the key concepts of research security, disclosure, risk management and mitigation, and international collaboration. All covered individuals must take this course annually as required by federal sponsors.
Who is required to take this training?
All covered individuals participating in projects sponsored by federal agencies with research security training requirements. The definition of covered individual varies depending on the federal agency. Agencies can at any time designate any project personnel as a covered individual.

Registration info
- Follow the link to CITI
- Select “LOG IN THROUGH MY ORGANIZATION” and select the University of Washington
- Login using your UW NetID
- Follow prompt to create a new CITI Program account if needed
- Confirm your CITI Profile includes both your UW NetID as well as your official UW email address.
- Note: Your NetID is not the same as your UW email address.
Tracking completion at the UW
OSP validates training completion within the UW’s My Research Training Transcript (MRTT) at the appropriate point in the project lifecycle to ensure compliance with sponsor requirements.
For training completion to appear in MRTT:
- UW Covered Individuals must provide their UW NetID in the NetID field in their CITI profile and must also complete the training in CITI.
- NetID is not the same as @UW email address.
Without the NetID in your CITI profile, the training record in UW’s My Research Training Transcript is incomplete and OSP cannot provide approval of completion.
We encourage everyone to take the training early and check your training transcript before deadlines.

Refresher training requirements
Refresher training is also available for those who have already completed the initial training. If you are eligible you will see a link to the refresher course in your My Research Training Transcript (MRTT) transcript.
