emancipated minor

An emancipated minor is a child who is legally considered an adult. In Washington State, emancipated minor status is not automatic for those who have simply moved away from their parents’ home or who have married; rather the child is granted the status of adulthood by a court order or other formal arrangement. Other states have different rules and requirements. For research purposes, this is an important distinction as children are a federally protected population.
