Authorized Institutional Official (IO)

Regulatory term [45 CFR 46.103(b)]. An official of an institution who has the authority to speak for and legally commit the institution to compliance with the requirements of the federal regulations regarding the involvement of human subjects in research. At the University of Washington, this is the Senior Associate Vice Provost for Research Administration and Integrity. This is different from the Institutional Signing Official who is authorized to sign sponsored awards and related agreements on behalf of the university.
