Frequently-Asked Questions

Should I send a professional services agreement to OSP?

A faculty member in my department wants to provide consultation to a company. Should I send the professional services agreement to OSP?

Most likely, no. Receiving compensation directly for engaging in outside professional work such as consulting is generally a “work-for-hire” activity that is not a sponsored program.

If the faculty member is doing this work outside of their UW appointment, they should follow the Outside Professional Work policy and process (Form 1460).

If the faculty member is providing consultation in their capacity as a UW employee, it should be treated as a services agreement and is handled by the faculty member’s unit (see APS 59.5).
