international nexus
International nexus is inclusive of the following:
- Travel outside the U.S. and territories.
- An appointment or employment with a foreign institution, entity, or foreign government.
- Consulting or collaborating with or for a foreign person, institution, entity or government.
- Consulting or collaborating with a U.S. entity that is 50% or more owned by a foreign person, institution, entity, or government.
- Receiving or providing materials, technology, information or data, or any tangible items from/to a foreign person, institution, entity or government. The interaction has an international nexus, even if funding (sponsored research) or compensation (outside work) is from a U.S. entity.
- A foreign talent recruitment program arrangement.
These additional situations rise to an international nexus for sponsored programs or other university activities:
- Visiting international scholar participating in your lab on a sponsored program (type of other support requiring disclosure on Current & Pending Support).
- A sponsor, vendor, or licensee with 50% or more ownership by a foreign entity (may require additional review).
- Foreign component.
This is not a complete list of activities or transactions that have an international nexus and may reflect a foreign party’s interest in University personnel activities. If in doubt, contact research@uw.edu.
