Frequently-Asked Questions

When should a PI be designated as a Multiple PI?

Use the multiple PI designation when ALL PD/PIs have equal responsibility and authority and the sponsor requires PI assurances for the project. See: NIH Multiple PI, NSF Co-PI

Additionally, if the department or school policies requires approval they may have Co-PIs listed as multiple PIs.

The “PI” listed on the eGC1 in SAGE is considered the contact PD/PI responsible for communication between the sponsor and the rest of leadership team.

NOTE: Co-investigators or Co-Is are NOT considered multiple PIs. While they make significant contributions, Co-Investigators do not have overall responsibility and authority for the project. They should not have a Multiple PI role.
