Mission

UW Positive Research aims to conduct rigorous human-centered research with the overarching goal of advancing science in order to improve medical care for people with HIV. Our research efforts are directed by cutting-edge science and guided by local and global Community Advisory Board input. Our intention is to conduct rigorous investigations predominantly focused on HIV treatment, HIV remission/cure, and comorbidities and co-infections associated with HIV. We will achieve our goals by partnering with patients and providers throughout the University of Washington, along with other collaborating institutions and community-based organizations, placing an emphasis on the participation of marginalized communities such as gender-diverse and BIPOC populations in our work at all levels.

Specific areas of research focus include:

  • Optimizing antiretroviral therapy (ART) strategies to improve ease of use and reduce side effects
  • Improving immune responses to HIV, including HIV remission strategies and work along the pathway to HIV cure
  • Treating and preventing co-infections, including hepatitis viruses, CMV, tuberculosis, and COVID-19
  • Addressing the complexities of aging with HIV, including the metabolic complications of HIV and ART, as well as neurocognitive changes
  • Developing treatment for HIV-associated cancers, including immunotherapy
  • Investigating treatment strategies for other conditions impacting people with HIV, including treatments for substance use disorders
