According to federal regulations, researchers may not involve a human being as a subject in research unless they have obtained the “legally effective informed consent of the subject or the subject’s legally authorized representative.” However, the regulations also allow an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to waive the requirement for some, or all, of the elements of informed consent when certain criteria are met.
