1. Health and Safety

Indoor gatherings are a common source of COVID-19 transmission.

  • If you learn you were in close contact with someone infected with COVID-19 over the break, it’s a good idea to get tested, even if you’re vaccinated and don’t feel sick.
  • You can find out fast about possible COVID-19 exposures through the WA Notify app — it’s free and anonymous.

As another concerning COVID-19 variant makes headlines, it is as important as ever that we as individuals and communities are vaccinated.

Coping with the Clouds is an educational workshop by UW LiveWell’s Peer Health Educators available for groups or one-to-one (via a Peer Wellness Coaching appointment), to learn skills for coping and thriving with the seasonal changes to stay well through the colder seasons.

If you find yourself worried about someone close to you, see the Counseling Center’s guidance on how to help when you’re concerned for someone else.

IF YOU HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS

If you are currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please stay home and  follow the instructions for what to do if you feel sick.

Leaders of the Pack

Finally, a couple more spotlights to help you get to know your student leadership…

Calen Garrett (UW National Pan-Hellenic Council President)

Calen is the president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Pronouns: He/Him
Academic Year: Junior
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Concord, CA
Favorite place on campus: Husky Union Building

What does your position entail? I serve as president of the governing body of nine historically African American Fraternities on campus known as the Divine 9. I preside over all meetings and council activities, serve as the council’s official spokes-person to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and campus administration, and advocate on the behalf of our individual organizations.

Why did you get involved in student leadership? I made a promise to myself a long time ago to never pass on an opportunity to make a difference in my community, to inspire others to be the best version of themselves. If my actions as president can empower others with a voice, then it will all be worth it. Through NPHC I have the ability to leave a lasting impact not only for the marginalized communities on campus, but for the University as a whole.

Contact Calen: nphcpresident@uw.edu

Paytan Murray (UW Panhellenic Association President)

Paytan is the president-elect of the UW Panhellenic Association. Her term begins in January 2022.

Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Academic Year: Junior
Major: Law, Societies, and Justice and the Interdisciplinary Honors Program (Pre-Law)
Hometown: Snoqualmie, WA

Favorite place on campus: The downstairs floor of Mary Gates Hall or the benches near the fountain on sunny days!

What does your position entail? Oversee the regular workings of the UW Panhellenic Council and Executive Board while holding bi-monthly meetings with all current sorority chapter presidents.

Why did you get involved in student leadership? I greatly appreciate all that the Panhellenic Community has done for me and hope to continuously foster a positive environment for all of those currently involved; while simultaneously working to provide engaging programming for our members, as well as taking action to eliminate the structural barriers which inhibit optimal participation in the formal fall recruitment process.

Autumn 2021 Resources & Opportunities (Vol. 4) – Husky Pawket Guide

Hi Huskies,

We’re well into the quarter, and likely right in the heart of midterms for many of you. It’s a busy time of the quarter, and while long weekends and holiday breaks are on the horizon, it can be a stressful time as well. Please continue to be patient and compassionate toward one another and, importantly, toward yourself. And remember, if it helps you can connect with a peer to talk about a variety of topics as well as access confidential mental health support from a counselor 24/7.

1. Health and Safety

Traveling for the holidays comes with many considerations this year.

Testing for COVID-19 remains a key part of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. Many testing options are available on or near campus at no cost to you.

With shorter days, it’s important to be vigilant about your personal safety and know the resources available to you.

  • Husky NightWalk provides a security escort when walking at night on campus, to/from the residential area north of 45th St., and to/from the UW Tower.

It takes all of us to remain vigilant and help mitigate acts of discrimination. Here are some helpful resources, including how to report bias incidents and opportunities for bystander intervention training.

Welcome to the 2021-22 year!

A message from Denzil Suite, UW Vice President for Student Life.

Hello Huskies,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2021-22 academic year. This time last year, we were launching into something completely new and different: the beginning of UW’s first-ever fully remote academic year.

While it was not easy, students, faculty, and staff adapted to this new dynamic skillfully and effectively. Each of you navigated academic and personal challenges – both foreseen and unforeseen – with grace and compassion.

As this new academic year begins, we launch into something yet again new and different. The return to an in-person campus experience brings with it excitement and cause for celebration, but, no doubt, it may be cause for some nerves as well.

Whether you are returning to UW for your final year or have never actually set foot on campus until now, we in the Division of Student Life are here to help guide and support you as you navigate this transformational journey of discovery.

We’re here to listen when times get toughhelp you with career choices, and make sure you have a friendly and inclusive community within the larger University environment. We also offer you a wide variety of activities to enhance your personal health, which we know is important to your academic success.

Student Life, in conjunction with our partners in the Office of Minority Affairs & DiversityUndergraduate Academic Affairsthe Graduate School, and more, serves as the hub of many of the activities that complement your academic pursuits. And make no mistake, your academic pursuits need to remain your #1 priority.

BUT you must also get involved! Your UW experience will be incomplete if all you do is attend class and then study all night.

We know from years of experience and research that students who participate in clubs and organizations, who get involved with their residence hall associations, who participate in engagement opportunities, or who hold office in student government — these students graduate at higher rates, they are more satisfied with the college experience, have better grades, and are less likely to stop out.

While the last 18 months have been a roller coaster, and we still must be mindful of an ever-evolving public health situation, do not let these variables deter you from (safely) getting involved or from making this experience an enriching one.

This is a great year to be proactive, engaged, to put yourself out there, and to really make the most of your Husky Experience.

Welcome to a new academic year. I’m excited for the things we will achieve together.

Sincerely,

Denzil J. Suite
Vice President for Student Life

As we wrap up an academic year like no other and look forward to a return to campus for autumn quarter, I want to acknowledge the milestone that is upon us.

During a year that often felt marked by turmoil, unpredictability, sacrifice, and anxiety, I and my colleagues in the Division of Student Life have been impressed and inspired by the grit and grace with which Huskies navigated profound ups and downs.

In our final Pawket Guide message of this academic year, I want to thank you all for your resilience and for the kindness and compassion you’ve shown one another throughout this time like no other. Wishing you all a strong finish to the quarter, and a fulfilling summer ahead.

Spring 2021 Resources & Opportunities (Vol. 4) – Husky Pawket Guide

Hi Huskies,

We’ve recently seen big changes in public health guidance, most notably a meaningful easing of restrictions for people who are fully vaccinated.

UW’s face covering policy is still in effect for now, however, these developments reinforce the efficacy of the COVID vaccines and signal substantive progress against the virus.

Bottom line: many pre-pandemic freedoms are returning for people who are vaccinated, and faster than originally expected.

Students aren’t hesitating

Many students assumed peers would be hesitant to get a vaccine. It turns out that assumption was incorrect. See the full series on the UW LiveWell Instagram.

Spring 2021 Resources & Opportunities (Vol. 3) – Husky Pawket Guide

Dear Huskies,

We are on track for a return to an in-person campus experience in the fall. Important to note: UW students will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning for autumn quarter.

Meanwhile, please remember – even with vaccines helping to turn the tide in the pandemic, our victories against COVID are hard-earned and can be fleeting. COVID is still widespread, and increasingly, hospitalized COVID-19 patients are young adults.

It is a critical time to keep up public health best practices, and to get vaccinated as soon as you’re able.

Spring 2021 Resources & Opportunities (Vol. 2) – Husky Pawket Guide

Dear Huskies,

Yesterday’s conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd marks a single, but important step forward in a journey of a thousand miles. Creating a more just and accountable society will not be achieved by a single event, but must begin somewhere.

Events like this trial and several other recent events undoubtedly conjure up a range of strong emotions, and bring back into the spotlight profound dynamics and important conversations that our country is far from done with.

During these times, it is natural to feel a deep sense of exhaustion and uncertainty. My promise to you is that you do not need to navigate these feelings alone — we are here to help. I have been continually impressed with your continued resilience, vigilance, and, importantly, compassion during these times. It is together that we heal and learn, and it is together that we advance meaningful change.
