At the University of Washington, I learned to lead by embracing my perspective as a first‑generation Mexican‑American. I carry my values, culture, and lived experiences into every space I contribute to. Through my involvement in Orientation and Transition Programs, First‑Generation Celebration initiatives, and my work with the Latino Educational Training Institute (LETI), I have supported student success while working to improve health outcomes for Latinx and Hispanic communities. These experiences continue to shape a lifelong mission to create meaningful change for others around me.

As a non-traditional, first-generation student from rural Eastern Washington with lived experience of drug addiction, a career in science once felt out of reach. That changed through translational research, coursework, and mentorship at UW, where I learned that addiction is not a moral failing but a genetic rewiring that promotes addictive behaviors that cannot simply be willed away. This reframing drives me to pursue a career as a research scientist and professor dedicated to advancing addiction research and treatment, mentoring the next generation of researchers, and expanding who sees themselves as belonging in STEM.

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; they are where they should be, now put foundations under them” -Henry David Thoreau. When I first joined the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments (CBE), I longed for a connection with something larger than myself; I longed for like-minded people of diverse backgrounds to reflect my own lived experiences. I longed for a castle in the air. The University of Washington chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS UW) became this castle, and over the course of my two years as president, I laid the foundation for this amazing organization to serve our college and the larger Seattle community. I am a proud Husky 100, a proud president and a proud member of the city that has adopted me!

At the University of Washington, I’ve built my work around a simple idea: strong health policy must be grounded in both scientific evidence and community stories. Whether I’m analyzing data in research settings or listening to families after an overdose, I keep seeing how preventable loss often comes down to gaps in access, communication and follow-through. In the spirit of being boundless, I’ve tried to turn that insight into action through Narcare, a national overdose-prevention nonprofit, and through county-level public health work; now, I’m excited to carry what I’ve learned at the UW into creating real change in the world.

My Husky Experience at the University of Washington—and the incredible people I have met through communities like Advanced Robotics at the University of Washington (ARUW) and the pre-dental community—has shown me that engineering extends far beyond the classroom, from designing devices for health care to developing robotic systems with ARUW. Moving forward, I hope to bridge engineering and dentistry to develop thoughtful innovations that improve care for dentists and patients while remaining grounded in gratitude and service to the communities around me.

Leaving Hong Kong as a teenager and starting community college at 15 taught me how to adapt, stay steady and keep moving even when I didn’t feel motivated. I began my Ph.D. at the UW during COVID, and when everything felt uncertain, I volunteered at vaccination clinics because I wanted my work to matter to patients and the community. I carried that lesson back into the lab, where I developed a primary human kidney cell model to study how inflammatory mediators and pregnancy hormones regulate renal drug transporters. Along the way, the UW taught me that independence doesn’t mean isolation, and I try to lead by investing in people through mentorship, trust and showing up when it matters.

My time at the UW has not boiled down solely to my identity as a transgender man competing in D1 rowing on the women’s team, the studies I have conducted surrounding Arctic Indigenous knowledge systems and their place in foreign policy, or accolades I have received along the way. Instead, it can be defined as a period of wanting to question all that I could, soaking in the love and knowledge that every one of my peers poured into this place and wanting to work toward creating a better tomorrow for everyone; a world that embraced open conversation rather than shunned it. The product of what has come of this time in the form of a degree, a Big Ten medal or the honor of being represented as a Husky 100 was never the end goal, but a mere tangible object that came from falling in love with the process of making connections and community during my time at the UW.
