Social Media Fellowship

UW Study Abroad is seeking two students to serve as inaugural Social Media Fellows. Earn a $400 scholarship to document your study abroad experience through high-quality digital storytelling and expand the narrative of what studying abroad can look like for UW students.

The selected Fellows will create photo and video content for UW Study Abroad’s Instagram account (@uwstudyabroad), highlighting academic engagement, cross-cultural learning, and the student experience abroad. This is both a creative opportunity and a professional development experience. Fellows will gain valuable experience in digital storytelling, brand-aligned media creation, and cross-cultural communication.

Selected applicants will be notified by June 1, 2025.

Orientation and content overview with supervisor Lily Rosencrantz on June 10, 2025.

Selection will be based on originality, content quality, storytelling potential, and digital fluency.

Social Media Fellowship

Eligibility: Open to UW students enrolled in a Summer 2025 study abroad program

Duration: 4 weeks

Compensation: $400 scholarship per Fellow, disbursed to their student account upon submission and approval of all required deliverables.

Supervision: Brief weekly remote check-ins with the Study Abroad Outreach & Recruitment Specialist.

Fellows must produce:

  • 4 Instagram Reels (30–90 seconds each)
  • 4 Instagram Carousel Posts
  • 8–12 Instagram Stories
  • 1 final reflective blog post or short-form content series

Content should reflect academic learning, daily life abroad, cultural immersion, and the broader impact of study abroad on students’ academic and personal growth. Content will be reviewed prior to publication and must adhere to the UW Code of Conduct.

Fellows will post to their personal Instagram accounts and tag @uwstudyabroad. Reels and posts must be submitted as collaboration requests to @uwstudyabroad, subject to approval.

Selected Fellows will participate in a brief orientation prior to departure. All content must follow UW standards of conduct and ethical media practices. Remember you are an ambassador for the UW while you are studying abroad. Content featuring alcohol, drug use, cultural insensitivity, children without parental consent, or behavior that misrepresents the purpose of study abroad will not be accepted.

Things to Avoid

  • Alcohol, drugs, or any behavior that violates the UW Study Abroad Code of Conduct 
  • “Throwing Dubs”  
  • Bland group shots – these can be okay, but we would rather have “action”! 
  • Cultural insensitivity – obtain the consent of anyone captured in photos/videos  
  • Including children in photos/videos – they cannot give consent without their parents
