Phase II Scholars

2008 DO-IT Scholars
 

Twenty Phase II Scholars attended their first DO-IT Summer Study session at the University of Washington in July 2009. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. Throughout the year, they communicate with each other, DO-IT participants, and DO-IT Mentors. They use the Internet to support their academic studies, and they complete projects in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and business. After completing Summer Study 2009, these participants graduated to Phase II.

Hi. I am Yomara. I'm a senior in high school. Doing well in school is my number one priority. I am the vice president for my school?s Key Club. I am a member of the National Honor Society and am features editor for my school paper. I enjoy participating in DO-IT Summer Study because of all the knowledge and experience it has to offer. I have spinal muscular atrophy type 2, which is why I use a power chair to get around. This summer I participated in Microsoft's DigiGirlz program. I have a passion for chocolate and the color pink. :)

Hi. My name is Mack. I am a senior at Global Connections High School in SeaTac. I have cerebral palsy. I would like to work with children. Basketball, football, track, and baseball are my favorite sports.

Hi. I am Erica. I am a senior at Pateros High School. I have limited use of my right arm from an injury at birth. I plan to pursue medicine and possibly study at the University of Washington. Hopefully, I will become a doctor. I love sports and play volleyball and tennis. My favorite is definitely tennis. I like to read and spend time with my friends and family.

Hi. My name is Russell. I am a senior at Liberty High School. I have Asperger's syndrome. I love driving my car. I enjoy video games and racing dirt bikes. Once I graduate, I plan to attend either Bellevue College or Central Washington University.

Hi. My name is Sam. I graduated from high school. I plan to attend Portland Community College this fall to study architectural design and drafting. My favorite classes in high school were band, pre-engineering, and anatomy. I enjoy long-distance running, playing the trumpet, building with legos, and playing video and computer games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Harvest Moon, Civilization, Rune Factory, and Trauma Center: Under the Knife. Even though I have dyslexia, which means I have trouble reading and writing, I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter book and movie series.

Hi. My name is Collin. I graduated from Juanita High School, where I was the goalie on the soccer team and defensive end for the football team. I have taken advanced placement history and math classes. I like debate and history. I am attending Shoreline Community College on a soccer scholarship before I transfer to a four-year school. I would like to go into politics after college. I have dyslexia.

Hi. I am Emily. I graduated from Vashon High School and will be attending Bellevue College in the fall. I enjoy sports and the outdoors. I was on the track and cross-country teams in high school. I am an avid skier, but I also enjoy river running (rafting), hiking, mountain biking, and cliff jumping. I have dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Hi. My name is Derek. I graduated from Snohomish High School. I have a non-verbal learning disability and dysgraphia. During the summer, I am a youth camp counselor. Counseling helps prepare me for a career as a band teacher. I enjoy refereeing indoor and outdoor soccer games, playing video games, having a good time with friends, and playing a variety of instruments. I also enjoy manga and anime. I went to Olympia and lobbied a bill for financial education in math classes, and I hope to get involved in politics later in life.

Hey. My name is Nejowa. I'm a senior at Global Connections High School. I have used a wheelchair for the past six years. I would like to go to Arizona State University and play college basketball. My favorite subjects are language arts, history, and art. In my free time, I like to use the computer, go outdoors, and hang out with my friends in the sunshine. I am a social and energetic person. I like to have fun and make things interesting in my life.

Hi. My name is Marco. I am a senior at Ballard High School. I am taking all of my classes at Highline Community College through Running Start. My goal is to earn an associate's degree in chemistry. I like to play computer games. I am also working on computer programming.

Hi! My name is Christopher but I go by Chris. I am going to be a high school senior this year. I like to ride my bike and play video games like Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I also enjoy shooting hoops in my backyard. History is my favorite class, and I want to be a historian. I also enjoy the sciences, especially studying animals and space. My favorite type of music is country, and my favorite country group is Rascal Flatts. I plan on attending a four-year university.

Hi. My name is Christine. I am a senior at North Central High School in Spokane. I have cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. In high school, I participate in track-and-field, cross-country, and basketball. I hope to play in collegiate wheelchair sports at either the University of Arizona or Illinois. I like to spend my free time in the gym, weight lifting, or on the treadmill.

Hi. I am Nate. I have a learning disability that affects my reading and writing. I use technology as an accommodation whenever I can. I recently moved to California with my family. I attended the University of Idaho but transferred to California State University, Chico. I am majoring in business with an emphasis on information systems. I plan to incorporate my love of language and continue studying Spanish and Mandarin.

Hi. My name is Aaron. I live in West Seattle and attend Chief Sealth High School. I have dyslexia, which affects my word retrieval skills and I have an auditory processing delay. I run cross-country and play on the school's Ultimate Frisbee team, which I helped found. I am interested in computer programming, math, and science (especially biology), technical theater, and choral singing. I am a Microsoft intern this summer.

Hi. My name is Wesley. I am a high school senior at Napavine High School. I would like to attend Lower Columbia College. I use a wheelchair to get around because I have quadriplegia. I appreciate when people ask me questions directly instead of asking my nurse. Someday, I hope to be a psychologist working with children or families. One of my favorite things to do each day is watch Dr. Phil. In my spare time, I like to read.

Hi. My name is Brianna. I am a senior at Woodinville High School. I can walk, but I sometimes use a wheelchair because I have cerebral palsy. I also have some visual and hearing impairments. I use Pidgin Signed English (PSE) to communicate in large crowds or in a classroom. I hope to go to community college and then transfer to a four-year university. I would like to have a career working with children with special needs. I love bowling and riding horseback. In my spare time, I like to read and knit.

Hi. My name is Shelby. I graduated from Eisenhower High School. This was a huge accomplishment for me, given that I was not supposed to live past four months old. I have proven the doctors wrong and am now a high school graduate who was even on the honor roll. My favorite class was American Sign Language (ASL), because someday I would like to be a sign language interpreter. This year I received a student of the year award in international language at my school. I have had a brain tumor, which has some effect on how I learn. Recently I had to have another, unexpected brain surgery, but I am doing great. My two favorite activities are paint ball and motorcycling. I enjoy going to church and participating in debate club. In my spare time, I like to create arts and crafts.

Hi. My name is Jeremy. I am attending Spokane Falls Community College. I plan to pursue pediatric psychology to work with children with physical disabilities. Currently, I am working in a paid internship at an occupational therapy office. I have cerebral palsy and play wheelchair rugby and basketball. I am also involved in weight lifting, archery, track-and-field, and table tennis. I enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction books. I am also learning Japanese.
