Council Chair Gerry Philipsen is Professor of Communication. His research interests are the ethnography of communication (descriptive, comparative study of culturally distinctive ways of speaking), small group discussion and decision making, and orality. Currently he is engaged in a study of the consequentiality of talk, that is, the social consequences of using the oral channel of communication as compared to other channels (e.g., graphic).
