UW Recreation provides student employees with a meaningful work experience. Our student employees engage in a variety of experiences including staff orientation and trainings, leadership development workshops, social justice roundtables, service projects, and social gatherings to build connections across the department with peers and professional staff.

Aquatics Coordinator Under the supervision of the Aquatics and Safety Manager, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for an assigned area within Aquatics and mentoring a group of staff members. Assigned areas may include: IMA Pool Guarding operations/training, Swim Lesson Programs, and Special Events. Examples of duties include: administrative and organizational tasks relevant to their assigned area and mentorship efforts toward assigned staff.
Aquatics Instructor Under the supervision of the Aquatics and Safety Manager, the Aquatics Instructor is responsible for instructing participants in group and private swimming lessons. Examples of duties include: working to ensure the safety and effective learning progress for swim lesson patrons, demonstrating and providing positive and constructive technique feedback to patrons, and building community.
Lifeguard/First Aid Under the supervision of the Aquatics and Safety Manager, Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of aquatic patrons at the IMA Pool. Examples of duties include: surveilling the pool and pool space for potential or occurring emergencies, taking proactive steps to prevent incidents, responding to accidents or incidents, providing First Aid assistance as needed. Lifeguard/First Aid play a significant role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patrons.

Digital Communications Lead Under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager, Digital Communications Leads are responsible for supporting UW Recreation’s communication platforms. Examples of duties include: creating social media content, managing and updating digital displays, web updates, and designing print media. The lead will work with the Creative Team to deploy content that will be viewed by thousands of students, faculty, and staff daily. Communications, Journalism, Arts/Graphic Design, English, or similar majors may be good fits.
Graphic Design Lead Under the supervision of the Manager of Marketing and Communications, Student Graphic Designers are responsible for art and graphic design for UW Recreation. Examples of duties include: creating marketing materials to be used for publicizing programs such as graphics for print media like posters, fliers, and handouts, as well as digital designs for social media posts and digital displays. Other duties may include logo design, photo and image resizing and transformation, and collaboration on projects with the members of the UW Recreation Creative Team.
Marketing & Communications Lead Under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager, leads are responsible for working within the Creative Team to develop marketing and communications programs and projects for UW Recreation. Examples of duties include: assisting with the development of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategic plan, organizing and coordinating the marketing needs of the department, and providing administrative support.
Outreach Coordinator Under the supervision of the Marketing and Communications Manager, Outreach Coordinator Leads are responsible for leading outreach opportunities for UW Recreation. Examples of duties include: reaching out to, and making presentations for, campus departments, registered student organizations, and the broader campus community; updating and creating marketing materials for programs; coordinating events and opportunities; tabling at events; and providing administrative support.
Photography Lead Under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager, the Photography Lead is responsible for taking and editing photographs for UW Recreation. Examples of duties include: shooting program offerings and event documentation, taking photos for marketing materials, editing photos, and collaboration on media projects with the UW Recreation Creative Team.
Videography Lead Under the supervision of the Marketing & Communications Manager, the Videography Lead is responsible for shooting and editing video for UW Recreation. Examples of duties include: shooting program and event documentation, videography for marketing materials, editing video, and collaboration on media projects with the UW Recreation Creative Team.
*Should skills allow, sometimes the photographer and videographer positions can be combined.
Web Management Leads Under the supervision of the Marketing and Communications Manager, Web Management Leads are responsible for updating and maintaining UW Recreation’s web presence. Examples of duties include: using WordPress to make updates, changes, and new pages for the Recreation website, managing the Recreation phone app using App Annie, updating webpages for other departments that feature Recreation programming, and providing administrative support.

Custodian Assistant Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Facilities with daily oversight by the Operations Coordinator, Custodian Assistants are responsible for cleaning and general maintenance of UW Recreation facilities. Examples of duties include: using and maintaining hand tools, cleaning restrooms, and setting up furniture for special events.

Fitness Assistant Under the supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Manager, the Fitness and Wellness Assistant supports the Fitness and Wellness team as needed. Examples of duties include assisting patrons to use and understand the InBody 570 (a body composition analyzer), keeping the weight room tidy (re-racking weights), cleaning group fitness studios, repairing cycle bikes, monitoring group fitness classes, answering questions from patrons, and providing administrative support as requested.
Fitness Program Lead Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, Fitness Program Leads are responsible for assisting with programmatic and administrative support related to all Fitness programming. Examples of duties include scheduling, data entry, planning special events, teaching classes, assisting with F.I.T, marketing and outreach, and tasks related to program organization and communication.
Group Fitness Instructor I Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, Group Fitness Instructors are responsible for teaching specialized classes such as dance, cardio, and/or strength and conditioning classes. Examples of duties include: developing and implementing lesson plans that are in accordance with their training, providing customer service, managing risk, and responding to emergency situations. Group Fitness Instructor Is have been teaching between 0-3 years.
Group Fitness Instructor II Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, Group Fitness Instructor IIs are responsible for teaching specialized classes such as cycling, TRX, and Pilates. Examples of duties include: developing and implementing lesson plans that are in accordance with their training, providing customer service, managing risk, and responding to emergency situations. Group Fitness Instructor IIs have been teaching for more than 3 years.
Personal Trainer Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, Personal Trainers are responsible for providing personalized fitness training and exercise programs to individuals. Examples of duties include: developing safe and effective comprehensive exercise programs for clients, conducting health and fitness screenings, and aiding in spotting techniques for clients.

Examples of duties include: developing and implementing a lesson plan, leading instruction courses for 5-12 people, demonstrating and providing positive and constructive technique feedback to patrons, and building community.

Examples of duties include: leading the daily operational activities in the absence of the Golf Range Manager, supervising the collection of fees, and monitoring special events. Recreation Technology Student Researcher Under the supervision of the IT Administrator, the Recreation Technology Student Researcher is responsible for researching the various technology features of existing fitness equipment at the IMA, and assisting with testing, configuring, and documenting equipment, including treadmills, stationary bikes, stair climbers and more. The Student Researcher will also be investigating emerging fitness technology and trends, helping to advise on new features and technologies that will best serve the student body at UW. The position requires a passion for fitness, a basic familiarity with fitness technology such as Fitbit and Apple Watch, and an affinity for self-directed research and learning.

Intramural Official Lead Under the supervision of the Intramural Manager, Intramural Official Leads are responsible for overseeing UW Recreation sporting events. Examples of duties include: providing training and support to officials, diffusing potential conflicts during games, and enforcing program policies.
Intramural Program Assistant Under the supervision of the Intramural Manager, Intramural Program Assistants are responsible for assisting in the coordination of UW Recreation sporting events. Examples of duties include: daily inspections of game facilities, preparing score sheets for games, and assisting game officials.
Intramural Program Lead Under the supervision of the Intramural Manager, Intramural Program Leads are responsible for supporting Intramural Program Assistants and the entire Intramural program. Examples of duties include: ensuring all material and communication is up to date, ensuring all equipment and employees are in place for games, and performing administrative duties.

Examples of duties include: helping to plan, lead and maintain a comprehensive and recurring Archery Open Shoot Night, issuing and maintaining equipment, and minimizing risk and initiating risk management procedures in the event of an injury.

Sports Skills Instructor Under the supervision of the Rec Clubs Manager, Sports Skills Instructors are responsible for planning and maintaining a beginner’s skill-level class in their particular sports. Examples of duties include: implementing lessons plans that are in accordance with their training, providing customer service, managing risk, and responding to emergency situations.

Mindfulness Instructor I Under the supervision of the Mindfulness Manager, Mindfulness Instructor I will have the opportunity to teach basic yoga classes of various formats, on-campus Rec on Demand classes, meditation classes, and private yoga. Examples of duties include: following class format guidelines, developing class sequences, adhering to specific teaching methodologies, and interacting with students in a safe and respectful manner.
Mindfulness Instructor II Under the supervision of the Mindfulness Manager, Mindfulness Instructor II will have the opportunity to teach basic and advanced yoga classes of various formats, on campus Rec on Demand classes, meditation classes, specialty workshops and private yoga. They are also eligible to become mentor instructors to support Mindfulness I instructors by auditing classes and providing feedback. Operations Assistant Under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator, Operations Assistants are responsible for performing operational duties in the IMA building during assigned hours. Examples of duties include: checking ID’s for facility access, issuing locks, towels, and exercise equipment, inspecting equipment for damage, laundry, promoting and providing customer service to members and guests on facility, programs, and services operated by UW Recreation, and use of recreation management software and credit card machines. Operations Assistants play a significant role in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for patrons.
Operations Coordinator Under the supervision of the Operations Manager and full time Operations Coordinator, Operations Coordinators (OC) are responsible for the safety and appropriate operation of the IMA and related facilities. Examples of duties include: Opening/closing of the IMA, including Central Issue Area and laundry operations. Operations Coordinators have oversight of 3-4 Operations Assistants and full responsibility of all decisions and policy enforcement in absence of full-time staff, resolving conflicts and incidents that may occur, coordinate emergency care if necessary, and use of recreation management software and credit card machines. Operations Coordinators play a significant role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patrons.
Roller Skating Assistant Under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Operations Coordinator, Roller Skating Assistants are responsible for helping manage the roller skating area during scheduled recreational roller skating hours. Examples of duties include: maintaining security over the facility, issuing skates, inspecting equipment, and providing basic instruction to novice skaters. Roller Skating Assistants play a significant role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patrons.

Crags Assistant Under the supervision of the UWild Climbing Program Manager, Crags Assistants are responsible for performing operational duties in the Crags Climbing Center. Examples of duties include: controlling access to the Center, promoting and providing customer service, use of recreation management software and cash register, maintenance of equipment, and enforcing risk management procedures. Crags Assistants play a significant role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patrons.
Crags Lead Under the supervision of the UWild Climbing Program Manager, Crags Leads are responsible for the safety and appropriate operation of the Crags Climbing Center. Examples of duties include: acting as a secondary supervisor and peer mentor to Crags Assistants, assisting with the hiring and training of Crags Assistants, and serving as a staff lead on group events. Climbing Program Assistants serve to enhance the experience for both climbing program staff and participants.

First Year Adventure Guide Under the supervision of the UWild Program Manager, the Field Instructor is responsible for operating the UWild Adventures outdoor program. This is a seasonal position that will operate over the summer with the possibility of extending into the academic year. Guides will lead groups of income freshman on overnight trips such as sea kayaking, backpacking, and car camping.
Outdoor Instructor Under the supervision of the UWild Program Manager, the Field Instructor is responsible for operating the UWild Adventures outdoor program. Waterfront Assistant Under the supervision of the UWild Boating & Rentals Manager, UWild Waterfront (WAC) Assistants are responsible for providing customer support throughout the watercraft rental process. Examples of duties include: controlling access, preparing docks, monitoring Union Bay waters for boat safety, and use of recreation management software. WAC Assistants play a significant role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patrons.
