We will be renting canoes April 17-18 and April 24-25 to kick off our rental season!  Reservations required.

* Canoes ONLY in April.  We will bring our kayaks out a little later in our rental season, most likely sometime in mid May.

There is NO PUBLIC LAUNCH for personal watercraft at the UW Waterfront.  Fritz Hedges Waterway Park, East Montlake Park, the Washington Park Arboretum, and the Montlake Community Center are the closest options to launch your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard.

Access to the Arboretum will be somewhat limited, as WSDOT has closed portions of the waterways due to ongoing 520 bridge construction.

Reservations

We are accepting walk-ups in a very limited capacity this season; walk-up rental availability is not guaranteed.  Reservations are strongly encouraged.  In April, we are booking 10 canoes every hour to allow for proper social distancing and cleaning of boats and equipment.  Please be sure to review the “WHAT TO EXPECT” information below for additional rental requirements.

Please fill out the form below and a staff member will contact you to confirm as soon as possible.  Submission of this form is only a request and all reservations must be confirmed by Waterfront staff.  Confirmation will come via email, sent to the email address of the Person Making Reservation as listed on the form below.  Reservations are processed M-F.  *We try to handle reservation requests over the weekend as our capacity allows, but cannot guarantee confirmation of requests submitted on Sat/Sun.

What to Expect During the COVID-19 Pandemic

  • Rentals are by reservation for Spring 2021 (see form above).  Walk-ups accommodated in a limited capacity. 
  • Masks/face coverings are required to be worn on-site (grounds, dock, building, etc). Our staff will also be wearing masks.
  • Proper social distancing guidelines are to be observed while at the Waterfront.
  • Restrooms are for patrons only. 
  • All boats, PFDs, and paddles will be cleaned and disinfected after each use.
  • High-touch points in and around our facility will also be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
  • PFDs and paddles are supplied with every rental, but we encourage patrons to bring their own Type I, II, or III PFD.
  • PFDs must be worn and buckled at all times while in our rental boats.
  • Boaters and personal items taken aboard will get wet; please plan accordingly.  We do not have storage available.
  • Maximum occupancy for each boat type is as follows:

Rental Details

Rental Eligibility

  • Boat rentals are available to the greater UW Community and the Public.
  • Our double kayaks are double occupancy only.
  • Our canoes seat two, but can be operated by a solo paddler.  We allow a third and fourth paddler only when they are under the age of 12 and weigh under 90 lbs.
  • Must be at least 18-years of age with valid photo ID to rent a boat.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Each boat must have at least one occupant that is at least 18-years of age with valid photo ID.
  • Children must weigh at least 25 pounds and be able to walk on their own. We strongly recommend that children have the ability to tread water.

Parking

Parking is free after 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturdays and all day Sundays/holidays.

Paid parking is available Monday-Friday in the E-19 and E-21 lots behind Husky Stadium ($4.00/hr).

Sound Transit Light Rail has arrived at UW. Avoid parking issues and use light rail, conveniently located by Husky Stadium and the WAC.

Discounts and Payment Methods

  • Patrons must be UW Seattle Campus students or UW employees and have valid UW Husky Card to receive discounted rates.
  • Only one ID may be used per boat, both for rental and applied discount.  Non-transferrable.
  • Payment must be made by Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, or Discover.  Credit card must be presented at the time of rental for pre-authorization, to be charged after rental and return of equipment.
  • Prices do not include sales tax.

  • Windermere Cup/Opening Day (May 1)
  • Home football games (September 4, 18, 25 and October 16)
  • Off-season: October 1-March 31

Pet Policy

Dogs are allowed and welcome in our canoes; we do not allow dogs in our kayaks.  No pet life jackets provided.
