UW Emergency Management
Non-English speakers
Significant concentrations of non-English speakers are found at University of Washington Medical Center and the UW Extension English Language Program facilities. On a daily basis 80-120 patients at the UWMC are provided with translation services and 400-800 individuals are participating in the Extension English Language Program offerings. Recommendations:
- Enhance emergency signage in areas frequented by non-English speakers
- Secure backup translation services or volunteers for the University of Washington Medical Center
- Create a phone line or website with translation capabilities for emergencies
- Include non-English-speakers in emergency policy planning and emergency drills
- Incorporate the non-English-speakers census into the map of campus hazards
