2016 HHMI EXROP Students

Maximillian Marin

HHMI-Max Marin

Institution: University of California, Santa Cruz
Faculty Mentor: Stanley Fields, Genome Sciences and Medicine

Max is a rising senior at University of California, Santa Cruz pursuing a degree in Molecular Cell & Developmental Biology with a minor in Bioinformatics. At his home institution Max studies how aberrant mRNA spliceforms contribute to tumor development. At the University of Washington Max is working in the lab of Dr. Stanley Fields helping to develop a high-throughput method to access the fitness of promoter variants. After finishing his bachelor’s, Max hopes to pursue a Ph.D in computational biology.

Isavannah Reyes

HHMI-IsavannahReyes

Institution: St. Edward’s University
Faculty Mentor: David Baker, Biochemistry, Bioengineering

Isavannah is a rising senior at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas where she studies Bioinformatics. At her home institution she analyzes RNA-seq data from phosphate-stressed C. reinhardtii cells with Dr. Charles Hauser. With support from HHMI EXROP, she will be working in Dr. David Baker’s lab this summer with the help of Franziska Seeger to investigate de novo protein interface design. Her research both at home and at the University of Washington are comprised of all computational work. From that, she has developed a keen interest in computer science and the tools that she can create with computers to understand data. After getting her undergraduate degree she hopes to get a master’s in computer science to further develop her interests. In her free time Isavannah enjoys cooking, watching movies and TV shows, and discovering new music to listen to.
