Program Description

The Undergraduate Research Leaders (URLs) are a team of undergraduates researchers passionate about promoting access to undergraduate research opportunities in all fields. URLs come from a wide variety of disciplines and support the Office of Undergraduate Research mission through peer advising, conducting outreach, and organizing events. They provide critical perspective to Office of Undergraduate Research programs by sharing their unique personal experiences with undergraduate research at the UW.

Learn More

  • Must be a current UW undergraduate student.
  • Must have at least 3 quarters of research experience OR an intensive full-time summer research experience by the start of Fall 2024.
  • Students from underrepresented backgrounds and/or experience in the arts, humanities, social sciences, or computer science are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Attend team meetings every other week and professional development workshops once a quarter.
  • Manage and facilitate Research Cafe events occurring on the 1st Friday of every month.
  • Participate in outreach events such as information sessions and panels on the undergraduate researcher experience.
  • Support abstract review for the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
  • Provide important student perspective on office programming.
  • Collaborate with other URLs on presentations and other projects related to the Office of Undergraduate Research.
  • URLs will receive a scholarship of $200 each quarter and are expected to commit a minimum of 1-2 hours per week to the position.
  • We ask that URLs have flexibility within their M-F, 9am-5pm schedule in order to accommodate URL meetings and Research Cafe.
  • Selected applicants must attend the mandatory URL Orientation on Monday, September 23, from 9:00 AM-12:30 PM.

Applicants must submit responses to three prompts, listed below. Each response is limited to 250 words.

  1. How has participating in research impacted your undergraduate experience?
  2. Provide a brief personal statement that describes your interest in the program and how this opportunity will be meaningful to you and your personal/professional goals.
  3. Share why you think it is important to center values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in undergraduate research programs and outreach.

Applicants must also submit a resume. We do not require letters of recommendation.

The Undergraduate Research Leader position provides a fantastic opportunity to engage with research on a deeper level by providing multiple opportunities throughout the year to discuss research with undergrads, at panel events, and ultimately at the Undergraduate Research Symposium. This position is perfect for anyone who is passionate about engaging the public in research, giving back to the research community, and encouraging more undergrads to participate in research.
