FINANCIAL SUPPORT

A stipend is provided as a subsistence allowance for trainees to help defray living expenses during the training experience. The stipend rate is equivalent to the stipend levels established by the National Institutes of Health, as published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The stipend level is determined by the number of years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. Relevant experience may include research (including industrial), teaching assistantship, internship, residency or other time spent in full-time studies in a health-related field beyond that of the qualifying doctoral degree. Experience gained in clinical practice may also be considered. NIH stipend levels are as follows:

Years of Relevant Experience  Annual Stipend for FY 2018 Monthly Stipend
0 $48,432 $4,036
1 $48,804 $4,067
2 $49,188 $4,099
3 $51,324 $4,277
4 $53,184 $4,432
5 $55,308 $4,609
6 $57,528 $4,794
7 or More $59,736 $4,978

The stipend level is increased annually in subsequent years of the program, as additional years of relevant experience are gained. Appointments are for 12-month periods, up to a maximum of three years of support. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory progress and the availability of funds.

Other support provided to trainees includes medical/dental insurance coverage and travel expenses to assigned scientific meetings and conferences. No support is provided for moving expenses.
