Facilities Rotation

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Through successful completion of the Facilities Rotation, a resident will gain experience and knowledge about topics related to husbandry operations and management in a laboratory animal care program.  These topics may include:

  • Facility design, construction and function
  • Cage wash equipment and function
  • Facility water systems
  • Environmental monitoring systems
  • Ventilated caging systems
  • Autoclaves
  • Research, review, and selection of equipment
  • Disinfectants
  • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Management of husbandry staff
  • Husbandry related research support
  • Specialized husbandry/housing conditions

Additionally, residents may be asked to participate in a husbandry related project(s) that can be completed during their 12-week rotation.  The specific project topic will vary based on current husbandry needs.  The resident may be asked to lead, manage, research, plan, communicate and implement procedures in order to complete the project.
