Sometimes the best photos are the unusable ones.
A lot of photography, and photojournalism in particular, is focused on capturing the decisive moment: the game-winning touchdown, a politician’s handshake, a wedding kiss. You either nail it or you don’t.
But often overlooked are the moments between the moments. Sure, sure… this sounds cliché, but that’s when people let their guard down. They’re unaware. They act like humans. And we, as humans, relate to human emotion – no matter how small or fleeting the moment may be.
This was some of the best photo advice I ever received: to keep shooting, even when it seems like nothing is happening. The best photos might pass you by.
