The University of Washington’s Upward Bound program has been serving eligible students at Cleveland High School since 1983. We started working with Franklin High School in 2000 and added Chief Sealth International High School in 2012.

There is no charge for Upward Bound services. Interested students in the 9th and 10th grades at the above high schools should talk to their counselors about applying. We recruit new students into the program from mid-December to February each year.

Most students are admitted the semester before the Summer Academy and remain through high school until they begin college.

All new students are on probation. Probation begins in the summer until midterms of the Summer Academy. If students do not pass probation, they cannot continue with the Upward Bound program. During that time, students are not eligible for stipends, which explains why continuing students receive $100 after successfully completing that year’s Summer Academy, but new students receive $75.
