Frances Contreras

Frances Contreras, an associate professor in the College of Education and director of the Higher Education Program, published a new book in July, Achieving Equity for Latino Students: Expanding the Pathway to Higher Education through Public Policy.
JW Harrington, a former geography professor and Faculty Senate chair at UW Seattle, began his new appointment as the vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW Tacoma, on Sept. 1. He is also a faculty member in both Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and Urban Studies at UWT. Last March, Harrington performed the role of Alcindoro in the Bellevue Opera’s production of La Boheme.

Emile Pitre

Emile Pitre, OMA&D associate vice president, co-authored a study published in Science that examines how a guided learning approach in a UW biology course helped students, especially educationally disadvantaged students, increase academic performance. The study was featured in a UW Today article and can be directly accessed on the Science web site. Science is a leading journal of original scientific research, global news, and commentary.
David Prince, mathematics, science and information technologies coordinator for student academic services in the College Engineering, was honored with the James D. Clowes Award for the Advancement of Learning Communities. Prince, who was featured in a UW Today article, was recognized for his efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented, first-generation and female students interested in engineering.
Sharon E. Sutton, an architecture professor, received the Whitney M. Young Jr. award from the American Institute of Architects. The honor recognized her work to increase minority participation in design professions and her use of architecture to advance social justice. She was featured in UW Today.
