OMA&D Outreach and Recruitment table
UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) staff and students took part in the fifth annual African Heritage Unity Celebration, held Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Rainier Community Center in Seattle. The event served as a celebration of African cultural heritage and provided participants with community resources and workshops.
Several community exhibitors, including representatives from the OMA&D Outreach and Recruitment team, were on hand to share information and services. A special presentation about strategic education featured a pair of UW students, Cathea Marcena Carey and Renee Plummer, who talked about their experiences as underrepresented students and how they overcame hardship to achieve academic success.
Vice President for Minority Affairs and Vice Provost for Diversity, Dr. Sheila Edwards Lange, gave special welcome remarks. Other featured speakers included King County Councilman Larry Gossett, Dr. Juana Royster, president of the Greater Seattle chapter of The Links, Inc., and Dr. Mildred Ollee, former Seattle Central Community College president.
