Information For Students

Find Research At UW

The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) database includes several hundred undergraduate research opportunities at the University of Washington . Be sure to check the database periodically, as new opportunities are being continually added.

START YOUR SEARCH NOW!

In addition to searching for an opportunity online, we recommend that you:

  • Visit the URP during advising hours in MGH 120 or e-mail us for an appointment. During the summer, advising is by appointment only.
  • When you visit, mention the opportunities that interest you. If possible, bring a copy of the opportunities printed from the URP database.
  • The URP can then help you write a resume and cover letter (if necessary) and advise you on undergraduate research at UW (e.g., scheduling time to conduct research, getting credit, and obtaining funding).
  • Alternatively, you can contact the faculty listed in the opportunity directly. If you are unsure what information is needed to apply for the position, the URP recommends you e-mail a cover letter, resume and unofficial transcript.

Although the URP database is an extensive list, it is not comprehensive. There are many faculty who prefer that undergraduates meet with them to develop an opportunity that is mutually beneficial, rather than posting a specific listing on our web site or elsewhere. Also, some departments may have lists of opportunities, which are not posted on this web site.

  • Contact the URP for help identifying a faculty mentor.
  • Talk to an adviser in your department about undergraduate research.
  • Check bulletin boards and other resources in academic departments, as well as opportunities posted by the McNair/Early Identification Program at the Office of Minority Affairs .
  • Ask professors with whom you've taken courses if they have an opportunity available.
  • Examine departmental web sites for faculty research that might interest you.
  • Make an attempt to read UW faculty research if you are interested in pursuing the field.

Note: Students who are under the age of 18 must fill out the Parental Consent Form to be employed by UW as a researcher. This applies to all research opportunities.
