The Amgen Scholars Program

About The Amgen Scholars Program

Vicki Herrera The University of Washington’s (UW) Amgen Scholars Program provides a transformative opportunity for some of the nation’s top undergraduates to explore and prepare for careers in scientific research (Read the press release ). This summer program places selected students in premiere research groups under the direction of UW faculty in the biomedical sciences and provides related seminars, career exploration, graduate school preparation, and other activities. The program enables students to explore connections between their undergraduate major areas of study and future post-graduate study focused on research in science, biotechnology and related fields.

The UW Amgen Scholars Program will host 25 undergraduates each summer competitively selected from a national pool of applicants (including current UW undergraduates).

In addition to intensive research experiences, participants benefit from graduate student, post-doctoral and faculty mentors. UW Amgen Scholars attend weekly research seminars on current topics in biomedical research as well as research skills and ethics. Faculty research mentors represent a range of departments including Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Chemistry, Engineering, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Genome Sciences.  Room and board is provided for participants to live on the beautiful UW campus during the summer program. Round trip travel from participants’ home institutions and GRE test preparation are also funded by the program.

The UW summer program participants will join students from the nine other U.S. Amgen Scholars host universities at a three-day symposium in California during the program, and will visit various Seattle-based biotechnology facilities to learn more about career opportunities in relevant fields. The summer program concludes with poster and oral presentation sessions where participants share their summer research with faculty, peers, and the community.

Outside of research and the lab, students have the opportunity to explore the sights of Seattle and experience the local culture. For more information, visit the
