Pacific Northwest trees grown and harvested sustainably can both remove existing carbon dioxide from the air and help keep the gas from entering the atmosphere in the first place. Thats provided wood is used primarily for such things as building materials, instead of cement and steel, and secondarily that wood wastes are used for biofuels.

Studying gamers who use Foldit helps researchers study the power of their strategies
When students showed up for Design Foundations Studio (Landscape Architecture 301) on Oct. 31, a quick, one-day assignment awaited them — they were asked to imagine converting a construction staging area into a park.
After he created the Center for Biological Futures at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Roger Brent joined forces with the UW to “generate better thinking and scholarship about the impact that increases in biological capability are having and will have on human affairs.” The result is an initiative, “Biological Futures in a Globalized World.”

Construction crews install another 22 huge concrete girders Nov. 5-7 for a new lidded overpass in Medina, closing the State Route 520 floating bridge and highway Saturday night through Monday morning for the work.

A final stage clinical trial of ivacaftor (VX-770) shows significantly improved lung function in subset of cystic fibrosis patients, as reported Nov. 2 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Pediatrician Dr. Bonnie W. Ramsey of Seattle Children’s Research Institute and the UW led the study.

Pharmacy student Karen Craddick, faculty members Micki Kedzierski and Nanci Murphy, along with several School of Pharmacy alumni, received awards for their community, advocacy and educational efforts.
Angelina Godoy, a professor of international studies and director of the UW Center for Human Rights, was in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Nov. 2, to support former political prisoners from El Salvador as they present complaints before an arm of the Organization of American States.
An exhibit of work by Cambodian-born artist Sopheap Pich will be at the Henry Art Gallery Nov. 10-April 4. “Compound,” his sculptural installation at the gallery, was originally constructed for the 2011 Singapore Biennial, although its modular construction will allow it to become an entirely new work in its reconfiguration at the UW.
A friends insistence that he take a trip to an unlikely destination led Mark Jenkins to write a play. The friend was artist Don Fels. The destination was Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where Jenkins met the subjects of his play — Cambodian youth who grew up in the United States but were deported back to Cambodia after serving time in American prisons.
