Health Insurance Waiver Eligibility

Waiver Eligibility

All international students in F-1 and J-1 visa status are required to purchase the UW International Student Health Insurance Plan, even if you already have health insurance. Having alternate insurance does not make you eligible to waive the ISHIP requirement. The ISHIP Counselor may grant an insurance waiver if you meet certain eligibility criteria and have comparable insurance that is valid in the U.S. For further information on the health insurance requirement and to review the waiver eligibility criteria, visit International Student Services Health Insurance information.

Health Care at the UW

The UW maintains a professionally staffed Hall Health Center, conveniently located on campus, to provide treatment for basic medical conditions for current UW students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community. It does not, however, provide major surgery, major illness or overnight care. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For non-emergency care outside of these hours, Hall Health suggests the Community Care Line at 206-744-2500. For emergency care, call 9-1-1. Twenty-four hour emergency care is available at several nearby hospitals, including the University of Washington Medical Center.

To search for an in-network health care provider, visit the Lifewise ISHIP portal.

As a weekend non-emergency option, UW Ravenna Clinic has an urgent care open on Saturday and Sunday (8am-6pm) and they are located just north of U-Village: http://www.uwmedicine.org/locations/primary-care-ravenna.

Contact the student insurance office at 206.543-6202 or stdins@uw.edu if you have questions about your insurance.
