Why is there no application deadline listed?

Recognizing the fact that students who are working on highly independent and creative research projects have flexible timelines, we encourage students to submit an application at any time during the academic year. However, we set target dates for the review committee to meet and evaluate applications. Applications submitted between these dates will be evaluated on the next target date. Target dates are announced on the website once they are scheduled.

What day should I have the application in by if I want to have it evaluated for the target dates?

We suggest that you turn in your applications by the end of the day (~5 pm in 120 MGH) on the target date.

What is meant by the eligibility requirement that applicants need to have at least 3 quarters of prior research experience or equivalent?

There are instances in which a students' undergraduate research experience might occur outside of the normal quarter sequence. For example, a full time engagement in undergraduate research during the summer would count as the equivalent of two academic quarters experience.

Can I apply if I am currently a sophomore?

Yes, you can apply as a sophomore if you will be a junior and have had at least 3 quarters of prior research experience (or equivalent) by the quarter and year the funding will be awarded.

What life science fields qualify for application eligibility?

Students majoring in all life sciences are eligible to apply if they are able to relate their research plan and/or educational or long-term goals to biotechnology research or applications.

Should I use single- or double-spacing for the research plan and educational and long-term goals page limits?

We suggest that you submit your application materials single-spaced.

In addition to my faculty recommendation, can I submit an additional recommendation from another faculty member, postdoctoral researcher, or graduate student with whom I will collaboratively work?

Although it is not necessary to submit more than one faculty member recommendation, we will accept more than one recommendation if it is beneficial to support your proposed research project - i.e., if a secondary recommendation highlights an aspect of your research or scholarly potential that would assist our reviewers in assessing your application.

Is there a financial limit to the proposed budget?

There is no set financial limit for proposed budgets because awards will vary for each research project. We ask that you justify everything in your budget. The review committee could elect to fully or partially fund your proposed project based on your justifications. Asking for more support than you really need could be looked upon negatively. Although awards will vary, we anticipate that the average award will be approximately $5,000 per student.

Can I apply if I have other substantial funding for the same research and time period from another source?

You may apply for funding from the Levinson Emerging Scholars program either for supplementary materials/expenses (which you would need to document) that your other funding does not cover, or for a time period for which you do not already have support.
