Impact

Expanding Access. Empowering Talent. Fueling Discovery.

Too many talented students miss out on the chance to engage in undergraduate research—not because of a lack of interest, but because of financial barriers, limited guidance, or uncertainty about how to begin.

That’s a loss—for the students and for the future of innovation.

Research isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s one of the most powerful tools for career readiness and a cornerstone of a high-quality college education. Through hands-on research, students learn to think critically, solve complex problems, collaborate across disciplines, and bring new ideas into the world.

“Expanding access to students who don’t see themselves reflected here is an absolute requirement… Our problems are too big and complicated to leave talent on the sidelines.”

Ana Marie CauceUW President, 2015-2025

Our Vision: Pathways, Not Roadblocks

Accessible Accordion

This is what leveling the playing field looks like:

  • Paid research positions—ensuring students don’t have to choose between research and financial stability
  • Faculty mentorship from experienced researchers across disciplines
  • Research seminars that guide students through the world of academic inquiry
  • Professional development workshops to build confidence, skills, and career readiness
  • Cohort-based model that fosters community, peer support, and long-term impact
  • Presentation opportunity at the Undergraduate Research Symposium

In a large competitive university, it is easy to feel isolated. I love that this program fosters a sense of belonging and encourages the students to grow together rather than compete against each other. I look forward to being a part of a community working together to reach a common goal and build lasting relationships.

Did You Know?

309 students applied for just 20 spots in our pilot year. That’s over 10x more interest than we could support.

  • 37% of applicants were first-generation college students
  • 38% receive need-based financial aid
  • 63% are incoming first-year students
  • 19% are incoming transfer students

Your gift helps us say “yes” to more students.

Honoring President Ana Mari Cauce’s Legacy

The Undergraduate Research Collective is housed within the UW Office of Undergraduate Research, in collaboration with faculty across multiple disciplines. The program honors the legacy of President Ana Mari Cauce, whose leadership continues to shape UW’s commitment to equity and excellence. The initial two-year pilot is funded by philanthropic contributions from several individuals and organizations, made in celebration of President Cauce. Our hope is to raise enough funds to endow the program by Fall 2027 and formally name it in her honor.
