Ambassador Sandhu engaged in conversation with President Cauce

 

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Ambassador of India to the United States, visited the UW to meet with President Ana Mari Cauce, Vice Provost for Global Affairs Jeffrey Riedinger, and leading UW researchers with outstanding scholarship and long-standing collaborations with Indian institutions. The purpose of the visit was to discuss potential areas of collaboration and to explore how to deepen partnerships between the University of Washington and Indian universities.

A delegation from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco, which included Mr.Qingjiang PAN, Deputy Chief of Mission / Deputy Consul General, Mr. Zhen CHENG, Interim Head for Education, Mr. Dong NIU, First Secretary for Education, and Mr. Kun WANG, Second Secretary for Consular Protection and Assistance, visited the UW to meet with Jeffrey Riedinger, Vice Provost for Global Affairs, Office of Global Affairs, Chrishon Blackwell, Director of Global Engagement, Office of Global Affairs and Dan Zhu, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Programs, Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange.

Koji Tomita, Ambassador of Japan to the United States, visited the UW to meet with Provost Mark Richards, Vice Provost for Global Affairs Jeffrey Riedinger, and leading UW researchers with outstanding scholarship and long-standing collaborations with Japanese institutions. 

The Ambassador’s visit celebrated the UW’s deep ties with Japan and explored opportunities to build new and stronger ties. Starting in 1910 with a course on classical Japanese literature, the UW Department of Asian Languages & Literature has been instrumental in the development and expansion of Japan studies in the Pacific Northwest and across the United States. Today, departments across the UW have developed long-standing collaborations with world-class Japanese universities, creating opportunities for engagement by faculty, students and staff. Other attendees at the meeting included Paul Atkins, professor of Japanese and former Chair of the UW Department of Asian Languages & Literature, and Saadia Pekkanen, Founding Co-Director, Space Policy and Research Center/Founding Director, QUAL Program.

    • More UW students go on student exchange programs to Japan than any other country in the world.
    • UW Study Abroad offers more than 35 opportunities in Japan (e.g., faculty-led programs, exchanges with Japanese universities, partner programs).
    • In 2017, the UW and Tohoku University established the Academic Open Space (AOS) partnership to foster collaborations and academic exchanges and build on existing STEM collaborations. As of 2022, AOS has hosted six workshops for more than 100 UW and Tohoku faculty to discuss and develop projects for research collaboration in disaster sciences, composite materials, aerospace, and clean energy.
    • In 2018, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs honored the UW Department of Asian Language and Literature for its outstanding contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and the United States.
    • More than 4,500 publications have been co-authored by UW faculty and Japanese colleagues.
