Internships

An internship is strongly recommended, but not required, for full-time MSDS students. Students typically participate in a summer internship after their first academic year in the program. Some students choose to take advantage of our convenient evening courses to complete an internship during the academic year.

Our students intern at top companies and not-for-profits throughout the Seattle area and beyond. Some internships have led to full-time job offers. Organizations where MSDS students have obtained 2019 summer internships include Allstate, Amazon, Apple, Bazean, Capitol One, Clobotics, Discover, Facebook, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Google, Microsoft, Nike, Walmart, and more.

Data Science Career Fair

The MSDS program sponsors an annual Data Science Career Fair every October. MSDS students are guaranteed early access to industry recruiters. In the past, participating employers have included a wide range of major corporations, mid-size companies, start-ups, and not-for-profits. Learn more about the 2019 Data Science Career Fair.

MSDS Career Services

In addition to an annual Data Science Career Fair, the MSDS program offers individualized career support and countless opportunities for students to network with employers. We accomplish that through the following career services:

  • Industry speakers
  • Data science panels
  • Resume reviews
  • Technical interview workshops
  • Alumni referrals
  • Networking dinners
  • Social mixers
  • Support for professional events (such as the Global Women in Data Science Conference organized by MSDS students in 2018)

UW Career Resources

Additional career events for technical students are held throughout the year at the University of Washington, which provide MSDS students with more opportunities to network with industry recruiters. Students also have access to Handshake and the Career & Internship Center.
