Office of Global Affairs
Strategic Planning Retreat
May 20, 2006
The Office of Global Affairs May 2006 retreat was one part of a comprehensive effort undertaken this past winter quarter to benchmark the international activity, linkages, interests and needs at the University of Washington. The overarching goal was to discuss ways in which the Office of Global Affairs might conceive the Provost’s mission in global terms and build a corresponding strategy aimed at enhancing and expanding the UW’s impact and presence around the world. Suggestions and recommendations emerged from a working framework that focused on:
- Enhancing the UW’s global position by building from existing strengths and leveraging comparative advantages;
- Articulating principles and values fundamental to a build-out of the university’s international programmatic and engagement activities;
- Enhancing the infrastructure and administrative support necessary to sustain a ‘ramping-up’ of global activity in research and service;
- Establishing learning goals for the ‘global citizen and leader’ for graduate and undergraduate students; and
- Strengthening and developing strategic partnerships and networks that advance in significant ways the overarching goals and strategies of the University of Washington.
