

UW Around the World: A Fact Sheet
- UW ranks 13th of top 20 doctoral/research institutions by total number of students studying abroad—1,586.
- The UW ranks 31st (up from 35th last year) of the top 40 doctoral/research institutions hosting international students.
- UW ranks 7th (up from 10th last year) in the nation in the number of international scholars in residence - 1,974.
- The UW ranks second among the nation’s leaders in language instruction, teaching 71 languages; the UW is the only university to teach all of the Baltic languages.
- The UW ranks 13th in the nation in sending students to study abroad, with over 1,700 students studying in over 70 countries.
- The UW enrolls over 2,600 international students from over 100 countries, most from countries in East and South Asia: China, Korea, Taiwan, and India. The 11,232 international students studying in the state of Washington last year contributed over $256 million to the state’s economy.
- UW programs that attract the largest number of international students are: Engineering, Business, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences.
- There are over 80 university-wide exchange agreements that enable UW students to study in universities around the world.
- UW leads the nation in Peace Corps volunteers, with 110 alums serving around the world.

The University of Washington is home to 9 federally-funded Title VI centers, the US government highest recognition of expertise in specific regions of the world.
- The UW English Language Program, one of the largest in the country, served more than 2,100 students from 39 countries.
- UW hosts more IGERT’s than all Ivy Leagues combined. Integrated Graduate Education and Research Traineeships are funded by the National Science Foundation. Current programs; nanotechnology, urban ecology, astrobiology and Multinational Collaboration on Challenges to the Environment.
