Although some individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have cognitive impairments that would preclude college attendance, many students with high-functioning Autism (HFA) do well in an academic environment, particularly if they have the opportunity to focus on areas of personal interest.
Temple Grandin and Dawn Prince-Hughes are two individuals with HFA who earned Ph.D. degrees and achieved successful careers as university faculty members and writers. Both have published books about their experiences as individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. These publications include Thinking in Pictures, by Grandin, and Aquamarine Blue 5, by Prince-Hughes.
