The marks of the University of Washington and the reputation they represent are important assets. The UW Trademarks & Licensing Office is responsible for protecting the University’s licensed marks.

The policies and procedures outlined on this site affect:

  • UW campuses in Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma
  • UW Medicine and its affiliates

Committed to social responsibility

The UW is committed to having merchandise featuring its marks produced in a socially responsible manner. Licensees are required to sign and abide by the University of Washington Code of Conduct and to be members of the Fair Labor Association.

Departments and programs

Approval from the UW Trademarks and Licensing office is required for all uses of University trademarks on products, even if the proposed uses do not involve the sale of a product, such as promotional items for conferences or meetings, items for fundraisers or gifts.

The University is committed to having merchandise featuring its marks produced in a socially responsible manner. If you are interested in obtaining a license to produce merchandise featuring University marks, you will be required to abide by the University of Washington Code of Conduct and to be members of the Fair Labor Association.

Retailers

University of Washington licensed products are carried at a variety of retail locations and online stores. UW Trademarks & Licensing is committed to supporting retail sales of licensed product in a variety of ways, including national and local campaigns, POS materials, and access to athletic event tickets for promotion and media support.

A registered student organization or sport club team may use the University name, but may not use it in a way that creates confusion between the organization and the University itself, nor in a manner that would constitute an endorsement, approval or underwriting by the UW.
