Compensation at the University of Washington goes beyond salary. The UW offers a vast range of benefits—from the traditional to those offered by other premier employers to those that are truly unique to working at the UW. The Resource—UWHR's e-newsletter—keeps you informed of all of these offerings so that you can make the most out of your UW employment.

WorkLife

Summer is ending and that means the start of a new school year. Time for new clothes, school supplies, and a revised family schedule. But it’s not just all about notebooks, pens, and a new backpack. UW CareLink’s Autumn webinar, “Getting Involved with Your Child’s School,” shares how to be a part of your child’s school community. This 1-hour webinar will broadcast on August 19 at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.

Pre-register at least one hour before the presentation by visiting apshelplink.com (use UW as the company code). Visit the Online Seminars section, select the presentation, and then register by clicking on the first or second session option.

Even if the new school year isn’t a chaotic time for you, it never hurts to think of ways to streamline and organize! This month’s UW CareLink Tip Sheet offers more general tips for organizing your life at home and at work.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to get your ducks in a row when it comes to emergency child care. If your child is mildly ill and between one and 12 years old, you can find sick child care through Tender Loving Care (TLC) at Virginia Mason Medical Center. The University underwrites the entire daily fee for UW benefits-eligible employees working .50 FTE or more and academic student employees. Families pay only a one-time registration fee of $5 per child.

UW WorkLife and Bright Horizons also offer a specialized back-up care program to all UW faculty, staff, and students. Use The Bright Horizons Back-Up Care Advantage Program© when your regular care arrangement is unavailable. Bright Horizons has a one-stop registration and call center open 24/7 designed to help you evaluate your needs and the sites available to you. Register now, so that when the need arises, you’ll be ready to call or go online to find care. To register, call 877-242-2737 or visit http://backup.brighthorizons.com. Log in with the user name UnivWA and the password 4Backup to create your personal account. Then, use it to request care for up to one month in advance of the date it’s needed, find child care locations near you, check invoices, and learn about providers. Be prepared to show your current UW Husky card at time of drop-off. The cost is $100 per day, paid by the parent of the enrolled child.

Don’t Miss Out on the Party
Smoking can leave you feeling left out – out of restaurants, out of work events, and out of life events. Rather than being on the outside looking in, call the Quit For Life® Program through your health plan to talk with a Quit Coach. When you enroll, you’ll have access to unlimited calls with your Quit Coach, an exclusive online support community, and even nicotine patches or gum. The Quit For Life® team can help you change your way of thinking and become a successful quitter. Then you’ll never have to be left out of the party again. Learn more about smoking cessation programs.

Bonus! Did you know that your monthly $25-per-account tobacco surcharge can be waived as long as you and any family members on your health plan who use tobacco products are enrolled in this tobacco cessation program? Or, should you and/or family members choose not to enroll but instead quit on your own, you can still re-attest once all covered family members on your plan stop using tobacco for at least two months. In this case, your medical premiums will be adjusted effective the first of the month after the new attestation form is received. Contact the Health Care Authority at 800-200-1004 if you have questions.

Reminders

Changes to Asbestos Training Requirement
The Environmental Health and Safety department recently announced changes to asbestos training for UW employees. While all new employees are still required to complete the training, most UW employees will no longer be required to complete it annually.

Annual asbestos awareness training remains a requirement for maintenance staff, custodial workers, and others whose work may bring them into contact with asbestos-containing materials, and additional specialized training is still required for those who work directly with asbestos-containing materials.

All UW employees should continue to report damaged building materials or asbestos concerns to their supervisors or EH&S. EH&S will continue to work with all departments to ensure they understand and meet the established health and safety requirements for asbestos. For more information, see details on the EH&S page.

Recently Change Your Name or Address?
If you were recently married, had your name legally changed, or moved to a new address, be sure to update your personal information in the UW systems so you will receive important benefits information at your home address. Remember, legally changing your name requires that you complete a number of local and federal government forms before making changes to your benefits. See Name and Address Change instructions.
