Inspiration and gratitude in equal measure as we close this academic year

This message was sent to all students, staff, faculty and academic personnel across the University of Washington on June 2, 2026.

Dear UW Community,

As we approach the close of our academic year together — and my first as president of the University of Washington — I find that I’m filled with gratitude for how you have welcomed me into the Husky family, and with awe at what this incredible community is contributing to Washington and the world.

This year has brought its share of challenges. We have navigated uncertainty, grief and moments that tested our resilience as individuals and as a University. And yet, again and again, I have seen what makes the UW so exceptional: your commitment to one another, to our mission, and to the belief that learning, discovery, innovation and public service measurably improve lives and strengthen communities.

I’ve seen this on display and in action — in classrooms, labs, clinics, performing spaces, public gatherings partnerships and shared endeavors — across all three of our campuses. It shines in the discovery that advances knowledge, the care that saves lives, and the teaching and mentorship that unlock human potential. I’ve even gotten to have a little fun along the way (and a BIG thank you to all the students and Registered Student Organizations who were kind enough to host me as an honorary member! See us in action in the video below.)

To our graduating students: Congratulations! You have reached this milestone through hard work, perseverance, and courage – and you embody the promise that the University of Washington makes to the public that we serve. We are immensely proud of you, and we cannot wait to see the impact you will make in the world.

I also want to recognize our incredible faculty and staff for making the UW such enduring and powerful force for good. Your dedication, creativity and leadership are inspiring. Your achievements and service reflect the very best of our institution – and congratulations again to our Awards of Excellence honorees.

To every member of this community, including our alumni, families, neighbors and friends, please know that your contributions matter. With the launch of our strategic framework, we are about to dive into our next chapter with renewed clarity and confidence; you are the reason I look forward to the many breakthroughs and world-changing accomplishments that lie ahead as one of the world’s premier global research universities.

As we undertake that work together, I remain deeply optimistic about the future we are building. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly in this first year and for everything you do to make the University of Washington such a vibrant, caring and inspiring place.

Go Huskies!

Sincerely,
