Dear UW Community,
The beginning of a new academic year is a uniquely special time in the life of our University. Whether you are arriving at the University of Washington for the first time or continuing on a path already begun here, I hope that, like me, you are experiencing the profound sense of wonder and possibility that infuses our campuses in Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma at this time of year. I even got to join in the fun and excitement of Move-In!
Over the past year, as I’ve gotten to know the UW, I have been continually reminded that it’s the people who choose to devote their talent and energy to advancing learning and discovery that make this one of the world’s greatest public research universities. That includes our incredible students who are earning degrees to unleash their boldest ambitions. It includes our faculty whose teaching and scholarship work hand in hand to create knowledge. And it includes our staff whose service is felt in every part of our institution, by patients and people throughout Washington and beyond. Listening to and learning from countless members of our wide-ranging Husky community has only deepened my appreciation for what makes our University exceptional.
In the year ahead, I look forward to building on that foundation together — strengthening our shared sense of purpose and supporting the success and well-being of our community. Together, we will advance the UW’s mission of access to education for all, build collaborations that lead to world-changing discovery and support healthy, thriving communities through our healthcare system and countless other forms of engagement. I invite you to join me for my first State of the University address on Oct. 8 at the HUB Lyceum, where I look forward to reflecting on what we have accomplished together and what we have the capacity to achieve in the months and years ahead.
