Altered landscapes: Art professors work crosses disciplines

Philip Govedares paintings arent representational, or quite what you expect of a landscape. Hell soon be presenting to the American Association of Geographers.

Later this month Harborview Medical Center patients will spot a haiku sample on their meal trays. Those interested can try their hand at traditional Japanese poetry, or the modern American Sentence.

Melia Watras, UW associate professor, will host Seattle University faculty violist Amber Archibald in a performance featuring students from both schools. The recital is at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in Brechemin Auditorium.

Owl, woodpecker photo exhibit tells of symbiosis, conservation at Burke Museum

Twenty-five extraordinary large-format color photos by Seattle-based wildlife photographer and UW alum Paul Bannick make up “The Owl and the Woodpecker,” on display at the Burke Museum through Aug. 7.

After playing for guests of the President and first lady in December, the Harlem Quartet will play pieces by Beethoven, Borodin, Shostakovich, Chick Corea and more at its Meany concert.

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas performs at Meany Hall at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 3. Returning to Seattle for the first time in a decade, the group is composed of famed Afro-Cuban music and dance masters who are renowned for their fiery rumbas, dynamic drumming, and sacred rituals.

The national association for college band directors is coming to the UW March 23-26, and there will be public concerts aplenty.

UWTV debuts new shows on dance, film

UWTV recently launched two new arts-themed shows that feature both independent filmmaking and a collection of contemporary performances from the UWs Chamber Dance Company. The two weekly series premiered March 12 and will run beginning at 8:30 p.m.Saturdays.

Handel arias — and faux arias — featured in concert March 14

UW singers will present original arias by composer George Frideric Handel, along with parodies and adaptations by Henry Fielding (author of “Tom Jones”) and other playwrights, heard for the first time in almost 300 years.

Pianist Garrick Ohlsson will perform works by Chopin and Granados at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 at Meany Hall as part of the President’s Piano Series.

The Trisha Brown Dance Company will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 31-April 2, at Meany Hall.

Join the Northwest Chapter Voice Foundation and Seattle Opera general director Speight Jenkins for a celebration of World Voice Day, April 18, at Harborview Medical Center. Jenkins will speak on the power of the human voice.

Double bassist to perform, give master class at School of Music

Scott Pingel, principal double bassist of the San Francisco Symphony, performs a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13 in Brechemin Auditorium.

The Chamber Singers, University Chorale and University Symphony will team March 11 for a performance of Felix Mendelssohns beloved oratorio Elijah.

World-class music and dance: The UW World Series announces its 2011-12 season

Pilobolus dance, the songs of Chava Alberstein, the African harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Carpe Diem and Emerson string quartets — these and many more will be presented next year.

The Emerson String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Meany Hall — and the UWs own Craig Sheppard will join them in the shows second half.

UW-written works lead March 7 evening of jazz

The Modern Jazz Ensemble will perform original works by UW music students and the Studio Jazz Ensemble will play music by UW alumni in Meany Hall.

Members of the UW Symphonic Band, under the direction of Steven Morrison and Alison Farley, will perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6 in Brechemin Auditorium.

Quantum String Quartet to perform March 5

The School of Music presents the Quantum String Quartet, winners of the 2010 UW Strings and Piano Chamber Ensemble Competition, in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in Brechemin Auditorium.

Münir Beken, a master of the Turkish Ud; and Senegalese percussionist Thione Diop will be performing and teaching at the School of Music March 4 and 11 respectively.

UW dance majors take to the stage March 3-6

The UW Dance Program presents its annual concert of undergraduate choreography March 3-6 in the Meany Studio Theater.

Student jazz ensembles coached by UW talents will gather for two nights to pay tribute to icons of jazz and present original compositions, too.

The UW Mens Glee Club will will appear with the a capella group The Coats at Eckstein Middle School March 4, and will be part of an a capella festival March 5.

The dance company Compagnie La Baraka performs at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 3-5, in Meany Hall. The groups choreography blends a variety of modern dance styles with lyrical ballet.

Student composers in the UW School of Music will present original works in the “Composers Workshop” in Brechemin Auditorium.

Students from the UW Baroque Ensemble will perform orchestral works and chamber music selections with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra Feb. 28 in Meany Hall.

Six UW students are betting fans of Americas Got Talent will come out for the final round of their own competition, Seattle Superstar Search, on Saturday, Feb. 26 in 130 Kane.

Northwest imagery, original music make unusual vision for ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Bertolt Brecht wasnt thinking of Seattle when he wrote The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a play with songs, in 1944. But director Alyson Roux kept the Northwest in mind when directing the show, opening soon at the Jones Playhouse.

Ren Sun’s quiet ink drawings stir discussion of retreating glaciers and what their rapid melt means for the world’s water supply. His art is on exhibit in the Harborview Medical Center Cafeteria now through Feb. 28.

Jonathan Pasternack, the School of Musics director of orchestral activities for 2010-2011, will conduct.

The UW Percussion Ensemble will perform a diverse program of music on Feb. 22 in Meany Hall. And Tom Collier will perform a piece by James Beale, music professor emeritus, who died last year.

‘Romeo and Juliet to be presented by Undergraduate Theater Society

The Undergraduate Theater Society Will present Shakespeares ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Feb. 24-March 6 in the Cabaret Theater in Hutchinson Hall.

Littlefield Organ Series presents Mark Brombaugh Feb. 13

Mark Brombaugh, interim director of music ministries at Christ Episcopal Church in Tacoma, will perform works by several composers on the UWs famed Littlefield Organ.

Pianist Simon Trpceski performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Meany Hall. The program includes works by Haydn, Mozart and Chopin, as well as a new work by Pande Shahov.

Canadian pianist Ryo Yanagitani will performs works by Debussy, Chaminade, and Chopin in a concert at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in Brechemin Auditorium.

The School of Music will present an evening of new works performed by internationally renowned visiting artists in the Contemporary Group concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, in Meany Hall.

The UW Symphonic, Concert and Campus bands will perform an evening of music for wind band ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Meany Hall.

Juan Pampins meditations ‘On Space part of Les Percussions de Strasbourg concert

The players will be arrayed around the audience in the unusual staging for this performance, which will include a piece by Pampin commissioned by the group.

Faculty artist Craig Sheppard will perform piano works by Brahms in a concert titled “Mostly Brahms,” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in Meany Hall. Its the first in five-concert cycle, to continue on April 28.
