Altered landscapes: Art professors work crosses disciplines

Philip Govedares paintings arent representational, or quite what you expect of a landscape. Hell soon be presenting to the American Association of Geographers.


Hospital meals served with a taste of haiku for Harborview patients

Later this month Harborview Medical Center patients will spot a haiku sample on their meal trays. Those interested can try their hand at traditional Japanese poetry, or the modern American Sentence.


Melia Watras and Seattle Universitys Amber Archibald lead talents in April 10 ‘Violas United

Melia Watras, UW associate professor, will host Seattle University faculty violist Amber Archibald in a performance featuring students from both schools. The recital is at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in Brechemin Auditorium.

Owl, woodpecker photo exhibit tells of symbiosis, conservation at Burke Museum

Twenty-five extraordinary large-format color photos by Seattle-based wildlife photographer and UW alum Paul Bannick make up “The Owl and the Woodpecker,” on display at the Burke Museum through Aug. 7.


World Series brings Harlem Quartet to Meany April 6

After playing for guests of the President and first lady in December, the Harlem Quartet will play pieces by Beethoven, Borodin, Shostakovich, Chick Corea and more at its Meany concert.


Afro-Cuban music and dance group to perform at Meany

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas performs at Meany Hall at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 3. Returning to Seattle for the first time in a decade, the group is composed of famed Afro-Cuban music and dance masters who are renowned for their fiery rumbas, dynamic drumming, and sacred rituals.

UWTV debuts new shows on dance, film

UWTV recently launched two new arts-themed shows that feature both independent filmmaking and a collection of contemporary performances from the UWs Chamber Dance Company. The two weekly series premiered March 12 and will run beginning at 8:30 p.m.Saturdays.

Handel arias — and faux arias — featured in concert March 14

UW singers will present original arias by composer George Frideric Handel, along with parodies and adaptations by Henry Fielding (author of “Tom Jones”) and other playwrights, heard for the first time in almost 300 years.

Turkish, African music coming soon to School of Music stage

Northwest imagery, original music make unusual vision for ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle

Bertolt Brecht wasnt thinking of Seattle when he wrote The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a play with songs, in 1944. But director Alyson Roux kept the Northwest in mind when directing the show, opening soon at the Jones Playhouse.
