The University of Washington is No. 18 in the world — and No. 3 among U.S. public universities — on the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released Aug. 15.

This global ranking was first established in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Center for World-Class Universities. Since 2009, the ranking has been published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, which is not affiliated with any university. The ranking of the world’s top universities is based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. It has been recognized as the precursor of other global university rankings available today and is still the most trustworthy one, according to the consultancy.

More than 2,500 universities are ranked, and the top 1,000 are published. Only University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Los Angeles rank higher than the UW, at No. 5 and No. 13, respectively, among U.S. publics. Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology top the list.

The consultancy calculates its rankings based on a university’s external recognition. The components of the ranking include: total number of alumni and faculty who have won major awards; number of highly cited researchers employed; and the number of papers published and cited. More information about the ranking’s methodology is available on the organization’s website.
