Arts Roundup: Strange Coupling, Malpaso Dance Company – and Faculty Chamber Concert

Chamber music takes center stage at the School of Music this week with a Faculty Chamber Concert and Schubertiade, both on March 6. Watch two different dance productions at Meany Hall, see an exhibition of student work at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, or catch a reading of ‘Sons’ as part of UW Drama’s New Play Workshop series.

This short exhibition shows works by students who are applying to partner with professional artists as part of the School of Art + Art History + Design’s “Strange Coupling” program. The public is welcome to come at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 4, for the pairing announcement and closing reception. More info.

Malpaso Dance Company

Malpaso Dance Company brings Cuban-inspired dance to Meany Hall, March 3-5.

Sons (New Play Workshop)
March 4-6 | Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse
UW School of Drama presents a reading of “Sons,” a slice-of-life story about an African-American family living in Brooklyn. This new play centers on 17-year-old Artest as he struggles to find his place in a world that offers limited choices for young black men. More info.

Schubertiade
4:30 p.m., March 6 | Brechemin Auditorium
Piano Professor Robin McCabe’s three-part concert series continues to explore the music of Franz Schubert through a historical lens. Come at 4 p.m. for a pre-concert lecture presented by Associate Professor Stephen Rumph that examines the relationship between Schubert and Beethoven. More info.

Faculty Chamber Music

Faculty from UW School of Music present a chamber concert on March 6.

UW School of Music faculty Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir (cello), Cristina Valdés (piano), and Melia Watras (viola) are joined by Pacific Northwest Ballet Concertmaster Michael Jinsoo Lim (violin) in an evening of high-voltage chamber music, including works by Haydn, Kodály and Dvořák.
