Data Science Masters

The MSDS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee officially started in October 2020 and has since worked on initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity within the program.

Mission and Value Statements

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the Masters Program in Data Science (MSDS) is dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and honor for human dignity to our students, staff, faculty, and members of the University of Washington, data science, and global community at large. An environment in which all members, regardless of background, feel valued and supported is a necessary component to achieving a world-class educational program that inspires innovation and achievement. We must not only respect every individual and value their differences, but continually acknowledge the continuing presence of marginalization and injustice that disproportionately impact certain members of the data science and academic community.

Our mission is to reinforce the importance and commitment to these principles beyond the dedicated Masters Program in Data Science DEI committee to the program as a whole through a number of programs and initiatives targeting MSDS and UW leadership as well as individuals.

Some of the activities and programs of the committee include:

  • Serving as an additional resource for students, faculty and staff with questions and issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion at the MSDS program.
  • Surveying the MSDS community needs and experiences related to DEI.
  • Connecting students, faculty, and staff with relevant resources and training opportunities.
  • Research on broader trends of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the data science community.
