Government Shutdown Impacts: Update

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, many students are experiencing delays for educational benefits administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to include the Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33), Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31), Dependents Educational Assistance (Chapter 35), Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606), Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (Chapter 30).

The VA is still processing education benefits for all programs, although at a slower pace and without some automated systems or overtime. These means some of you may see a delay in your benefits. The VA’s GI Bill Hotline (1-888-GIBILL-1) is closed during the shutdown.

We want to assure you that we are aware of these delays and we are tracking the overall situation. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Students are not dropped due to late tuition payment.
  • No late fees are added for students using Chapter 33 or Chapter 31.
  • You will not have registration holds.
  • You may still receive emails from Student Fiscal Services about unpaid tuition.

If you need assistance, we encourage you to apply for financial aid, if you have not already done so. You can apply by completing the 2025-2026 FAFSA.

In addition, you can also apply for a short-term loan. Due to the circumstances, we can waive the $30 service charge.

Repayment is due by the next quarter, or whenever additional funds such as financial aid arrive on your account, whichever comes first. There is no interest on the short-term loans, but there is a $30 service charge added to the repayment amount.

Maximum amounts and cost of borrowing:

  • $2,500 for Undergraduates
  • $3,200 for Graduate/Professional students

For more information, please see the Office of Student Financial Aid’s Short-Term Loan page.
