Today public health officials announced that the first death in the United States attributed to the novel coronavirus has occurred in King County. I write today to ensure you are aware of how the University is working with public health officials to be as prepared as possible to protect the health of the UW community.

Working together is our best defense against threats to health
Just as important as our response to the coronavirus threat is our responsibility to avoid stigmatizing, stereotyping, and perpetuating the racism that can accompany diseases associated with a country or people.
Recognition for the UW’s broad, deep commitment to public service
I’m very proud that the Carnegie Foundation has included all three UW campuses among the new recipients of its Community Engagement Classification. This designation is a recognition of our University’s broad, deep commitment to civic responsibility and meaningful collaboration to serve the public.
Our global alumni network lets us tackle big ideas all over the world
Thanks to our global community, we have unique opportunities to share the quest for knowledge and discovery far beyond our campuses. This weekend, I was honored to take part in one such opportunity: Converge Taipei.
Come together to honor – and support – our veterans
The University of Washington is proud to honor all veterans, especially the students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents who are part of our UW family. Throughout the week leading up to our annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony, we are hosting events to celebrate our veterans and help our community better understand how to support our friends and colleagues who have served.
The UW’s global reach creates opportunities for all
Today, we officially launch the Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange, or CIRCLE, to streamline and enhance support for international students, global education and opportunities for cross-cultural exchange. The launch of CIRCLE coincides with UW Global Month, a chance to celebrate our global impact and highlight the many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to experience and share the richly diverse cultures that shape our community.
New Burke Museum builds priceless connections to our people and our past
Last week marked the opening of the new Burke Museum, a beautiful and innovative home for this priceless public resource, which is so integral to our campus and state. For a great public university like the UW, the Burke is a vital bridge connecting our core mission of education and discovery to the public.
Welcome to a new academic year!
The start of a new academic year at the University of Washington is always an exciting season — a time for friends and colleagues to reunite, a fresh new page for returning students and a whole new chapter for those just beginning their UW experience. I’m grateful to be kicking off the UW’s 159th year with our whole community.
Everyone counts in the upcoming 2020 Census
Next year, the federal government will make an effort to count every person in the country as part of the 2020 Census. This national exercise is essential for our democracy. And ensuring it is as accurate as possible – which relies on your participation – is vital for our collective success.
Thank you, Grant County, for being great neighbors in the UW’s time of need
Yesterday’s visit to Quincy High School in Grant County with the Husky Band was a fabulous opportunity to say THANK YOU to all the members of this community.
