February newsletter (formatted)

Dear UW Parents & Families,

We are truly excited to see many of our Huskies back on campus. In just a few weeks, your Huskies will be preparing for their finals week, so we wanted to share updates, events and resources to help your Husky finish winter quarter strong.

If your student is in need of academic, wellness or financial help during this time, our Student Life and Academic Support colleagues are on hand to help with any issues that maybe affecting your student’s success this quarter.  We encourage Huskies to reach out to our Student Life team for any questions that they may have; they can visit them in person at Gerberding 101 during office hours or email them at stulife@uw.edu. There are additional campus programs available to our students. If you do not see the resource your student needs, check out our the UW Parent & Family Resource Guide at uw.edu/parents.

We are also pleased to share the news that Commencement 2022 will be held in person at Husky Stadium. We are so excited for the Class of 2022 and their families!

We hope you and your Husky are safe and healthy. Please stay in touch.

Connecting with the UW community

Provost Town Hall

Feb. 15 | 3–4 p.m.

Join UW Provost and Executive Vice President Mark Richards for a livestreamed discussion of excellence in teaching and learning; advancing diversity, equity and inclusion; and post-pandemic challenges and opportunities. As provost, he is the University’s chief academic and budget officer. We invite our UW Parents & Families interested in submitting a question in advance to email provost@uw.edu.

UW Custodian Project

The UW Custodian Project was started in March 2020 by Husky Evalynn Fae Taganna Romano, the daughter of two UW custodians (two UW parents!). Romano earned her bachelor’s degree, and master’s degrees in social work and in public health. Inspired by her UW parents — who dedicated a total of nearly six decades to cleaning UW buildings — Romano brought food, coffee, hand-sewn masks and thank-you cards to custodians once a week, with support from friends, businesses and community organizations.

Another part of the project is an exhibit of photos taken by 16 custodians, paired with their testimonials. Huskies and their families can view “(in)Visibility” in the UW Tower through March 31, 2022.

Husky Career Closet

Beginning Feb. 11, 2022, the Husky Career Closet will offer drop-in hours for Huskies in need of workplace attire for an internship or job. We are excited to share that this Career Closet will be a permanent space for Huskies looking for free, gently used workplace attire.

Private space for virtual interviews

The Career & Internship Center team noticed an increased need for Huskies looking for dedicated quiet spaces for virtual interviews. They began offering rooms this academic year, Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They ask that students put in their requests for these spaces at least two business days before their scheduled interviews.

Preparing for spring quarter

Spring quarter registration is right around the corner. Huskies can take advantage of online career & academic planning resource through PathwayU. They will receive suggestions about which majors (pathways) would help prepare them for careers that match their interests and values!
