The University of Washington’s newest freshman class is the largest and most diverse in the school’s 161-year history.

Each year, university officials conduct an enrollment count on the second Friday after classes begin.

The incoming new class across all three campuses, including first-year students and transfer students, totals 11,510, of which 8,019 — 69.7% — are Washington residents.

The Seattle campus enrolled its largest freshman class, 7,410, including 4,433 Washington residents and a record number of underrepresented minority students, 1,143, making this class the most diverse. Of the 8,776 new undergraduates on the Seattle campus, including both freshmen and transfer students, 1, 456 are from underrepresented minority groups — a record-high percentage.

The number of Washington community college transfer students enrolled at the UW across all three campuses this fall was 2,022 — 1,135 in Seattle, 417 in Bothell and 470 in Tacoma. Of these, 85.3% are Washington residents.

Overall, the number of undergraduate applicants to the Seattle campus increased this year by 6.6% to 57,140, with an admissions rate of 47.4%. The Seattle campus’ admission rate for Washington residents was 54.8%.

Total enrollment across all three campuses decreased very slightly, from 60,116 to 60,081 — 49,522 in Seattle, 5,758 at UW Bothell and 4,814 at UW Tacoma (13 students are enrolled at more than one UW campus).

Of the 60,081 enrolled students across all three campuses, 42,616 are undergraduate and 17,465 are pursuing graduate or professional degrees. The number of international students enrolled across all three campuses is 8,799 (14.6%) – 8,236 in Seattle, 356 at UW Bothell and 209 at UW Tacoma.

The enrollment count — a snapshot in time — will later be presented to the UW Board of Regents.
