Photo exhibit displays the impact of the war in Iraq

“Truth, it has been said, is the first casualty of war. Unembedded bears witness to the enduring power of independent journalism. In their unflinching look at war-ravaged Iraq, four freelance photojournalists show that life there is brutal yet poignant; that compassion co-exists with anger, hatred and fear.” -excerpt from Unembedded

A nationally touring photo exhibit of images from Iraq will be on display at the UW Odegaard Undergraduate Library through December 6, 2008, documenting the impact of the war in Iraq.

Entitled Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq, the exhibit features 60 photos captured outside of the U.S. military’s unembedded journalist program. Photojournalists Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Kael Alford, Thorne Anderson and Rita Leistner lived and worked in Iraq, providing an on-the-ground perspective unsupported and unbiased by military protection. Their photos depict scenes of destruction, suffering, and humanity that are the reality of the war in Iraq.

Admission to Unembedded is free and members of the public are welcome. Two of the photojournalists, Thorne Anderson and Kael Alford, will be speaking and signing books on the UW campus in room 120 of Kane Hall on Oct. 12, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. They will also be at the UW Bookstore at 1 p.m. on Oct. 11.

The nonprofit Health Alliance International, affiliated with the UW’s Department of Global Health, is one of more than 30 community and campus groups and individuals bringing the exhibit to Seattle. Health Alliance International (HAI) focuses on public-sector health systems and strengthening a progressive realization of the right to health. Founded in 1987, HAI partners with governments in developing countries to incorporate key health services (such as HIV testing and treatment and maternal and child care) into the primary health care system. HAI currently has programs in Mozambique, Timor-Leste, Côte d’Ivoire and Sudan.
